With only 6 weeks to go until the start of the Yonex Welsh International, the excitement is building. The event is now in its 2nd year as an International Challenge tournament and with a total prize fund of $15,000 and increased ranking points, the event attracts some of the best players in the world. In a Commonwealth Games qualifying year, we are hoping for an even bigger entry than last year which saw over 200 players from 25 countries descend upon the Welsh Capital.
From a Welsh perspective, our senior internationals and Commonwealth Games hopefuls, Joe Morgan, Nic Strange, Dan Font, Oliver Gwilt, Carissa Turner and Sarah Thomas will be looking to produce strong performances and progress through to the latter rounds, pick up valuable ranking points from their home event. Furthermore, the Junior Welsh players will also be looking to deliver great performances whilst gaining a wealth of experience playing at an international level.
This year, the event starts a day earlier with qualifying on Wednesday 27th November and the semi-finals & finals now taking place on Saturday 30th November (with the finals being scheduled for a 5pm start). Friday evening also promises to be a thrilling evening of badminton with the quarter-finals commencing at 5pm. There are no excuses; Come along to Sport Wales National Centre, enjoy some top quality badminton and show the players your support. The best part? Entry is FREE.
Additionally, we are always looking for volunteers to help out at the event, especially drivers and line judges. If you are interested in helping out in any way, please get in touch with James Phillips
