On an experimental day with courts and a new venue the 2014 Yonex Ycsports Open had a huge entry and ran perfectly to schedule with the mixed doubles finishing with 30 seconds to spare on the allotted time. The men's singles was a hard fought affair with many long lasting matches, Will Kitching added to his Newport title to win the first two tournaments of the season beating Gareth Day in the final 21/16, 16/21, 21/10. Gareth beat Dom Brown in the semi final for the very first time.

The ladies singles was very entertaining with Gean Sou Mo reigning supreme once again, taking home the coveted trophy and vouchers. Katie Whiteman finished runner up, winning a host of raffle prizes in the process.

The men's doubles was an extremely hard fought affair with controversy right from the first game and arguments, line calls and light bulbs playing their part in an eventful first few rounds. Darren Wong and Dom Brown finally went one step further than last year with the scratch pairing winning their first doubles tournament together beating number 2 seeds Ollie Hartery and Chris Jeynes in the final.

The women's doubles saw the return of the diamond pair Alice Palmer and Hannah Killick who won another title to add to their cabinet.

But the story of the day was probably the mixed scratch pairing of Wai Lim and Gean Sou Mo who, having never played together, eased their way into the final where they met number one seeds and Newport winners Andrew Simpson and Helen Stoddart. It was a tight match which went down to the wire finishing in dramatic fashion. In a best of 3 to 15 points with extended play to 21, Wai and Gean emerged victorious 21-20 in the final game, with Wai going one better than last year's runner up place and taking the Ycsports open title back to the shop!
