There was a healthy invasion of Welsh players at the Wiltshire Senior Silver over the weekend with 3 of the 5 titles coming back over the Severn Bridge. James Philips continued his recent good form in winning the mixed with Vikki Jones and the men’s doubles with Raj Popat who was making a welcome return to the court after an Achilles operation. The third title came from new doubles pairing Alice Palmer and Ellen Mahenthiralingam. Not only did Welsh players take titles but they were also very involved in the latter stages of most events with Rob John coming close in men’s doubles and mixed with Ellen and Aimee Moran with Tom Meakin also reaching the final stages of the mixed. Aimee took quite a few scalps before losing a tight match against top English player Georgina Bland, the West Wales player showing a continuing return to fitness after an operation some months ago.
Also out and about were Andrew Jones and Will Painter who came runners up in the Nott’s U17 Silver event, a good performance by the youngsters.
This week Carissa Turner, Sarah Thomas, Joe Morgan and Nic Strange travel to the Austrian Open. Thomas and Turner are seeded 4th and will be hoping for a kinder draw than in the Welsh International.
