The annual Welsh Universities Cup took place over the weekend of 27th/28th April 2013. The team tournament produced much excitement with Cardiff University narrowly defeating Glamorgan University 3-2 in their first Game. The other first round tie produced a close finish between the varsity rivals Bangor University and Aberystwyth University, seeing Bangor win 3-2. In the second round Swansea University got off to a flying start beating Aberystwyth 5-0, whilst Glamorgan edged out Bangor 3-2 in another close match. The third round saw Cardiff follow Swansea’s lead, taking Aberystwyth 5-0, whilst Swansea won 4-1 against Bangor. In the fourth round, both Cardiff and Swansea stepped up their campaigns, seeing Cardiff defeat Bangor 5-0 and Swansea prevail over Glamorgan 4-1 despite some very closely fought games. The last round saw Glamorgan win 3-2 against Aberystwyth, placing Glamorgan third, Bangor fourth and Aberystwyth fifth overall.
A Swansea-Cardiff final was to ensue as in the previous two years where Swansea stole the title. First up was the mixed doubles where Cardiff’s Nic Ward and Roshani Mann put Cardiff in the lead against Swansea’s Sam Gorell and Sophie Ttophi, with a 21-18, 17-21,21-12 win. This was followed by another close win for Cardiff where Wai Lim and Huw Bowen edged out Jeongih Ho and Victor Pang 23-21, 21-19. With Cardiff poised to take the title at 2-0 in the match, Swansea’s Alice Palmer and Sophie Ttophi put in a strong performance to beat Roshani Mann and Cerys Hickinbottom 21-14, 21-15. Men’s singles would see Cardiff’s Domonic Brown play Sam Gorell with despite many close games, had never won against Dom. In one of the highlights of the tournament, Sam took his first win in his last university game 21-19, 21-19. The match now tied at 2-2, the final game would be the decider where Alice Palmer from Swansea would play Cardiff’s Ursula Szegner. Unfortunately for Cardiff, Alice proved too strong and took the match 21-10, 21-6 taking Swansea to their third Welsh Universities Cup Team title with the 3-2 win.
Day two was the individual’s competition with approximately 50 players representing their Universities. In the mixed doubles, Cardiff’s Nic Ward and Roshani Mann took the title with a 21-19, 22-20 win against Swansea’s Sam Gorell and Alice Palmer. Next the men’s doubles was won by Glamorgan’s Chris Pickard and Gareth Day with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Swansea’s Sam Gorell and Jeongih Ho. In the ladies doubles, Swansea’s Alice Palmer and Sophie Ttophi took the title against Cardiff’s Cerys Hickinbottom and Roshani Mann 21-8, 21-15. The men’s singles was won by the dominant Sam Gorell of Swansea, against Cardiff’s Nic Ward who had to pull out injured during the first game, after an intense semi-final win. The ladies singles was won by Swansea’s Alice Palmer: 21-12, 21-16 against Cardiff’s Roshani Mann.
The tournament was a great success for University Badminton in Wales and a great advert for the sport. I would like to add a big thank you to all the supporters, drivers and team organisers who also contributed to this event, Welsh Badmintons James Phillips for behind the scenes organisation, and Nic Strange who helped on the event desk. The next WUC will head north to Bangor University for the 2014 event.
