 Newport Junior Badminton club

Newport Badminton Club has launched a new Junior Club with Carissa Turner, the current Welsh Badminton Ladies number one, as Head Coach.

The club, which ran the biggest Welsh Satellite Series event last year at Newport Leisure Centre, are helping to broaden the reach and participation of badminton in South East Wales. Generously sponsored by Newtown Motors Nissan and Babolat, the club has attracted 15 children in its first weeks.

The Junior Club is every Thursday night from 7.30-8.30pm at the newly refurbished Pill Millennium Centre, and welcomes any ability from beginner to county level, aged 11 to 17 years old. For those just starting the sport, Newport Badminton Club provide all the latest equipment, kindly provided by one of their sponsors, Babolat. Each session is only £2 with the first night free to encourage children to come and try the sport.

Newport Club Chairman, Fiach O’Rourke said,

“I am delighted to announce the launch of Newport’s only junior badminton club and coaching.”

He continued,

“Our sponsors Newtown Motors are helping us foster the next generation of talent in Wales, and increase participation in sport.”

Fiach O’Rourke, himself an ex-Irish International player, brought in Carissa Turner, the current Welsh Ladies number one, to be Head Coach.

“We are particularly excited that Carissa Turner has agreed to be our coach as it is central to our remit to encourage more female participants to the sport.”
