Commonwealth Badminton Day, which was held at Bryn Estyn Badminton Centre in Deganwy on 21st August, was a great way to inspire young players and celebrate the success of the Wales team.

The session was lucky to have Neil Cottrill, who represented his country in the 2002 Commonwealth Games and played internationally, achieving his highest men’s doubles ranking of #12 in 1996. Neil gave the young players inspiration and encouragement to go forward trying their best. The session also had inspiration from Joe Cottrill who is currently only 15 and represents Wales in many tournaments. Starting the session off with a quick video from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and a presentation with a display of trophies and medals gave the young players that extra encouragement that is it possible to achieve with determination and passion.

During the session the players were split into different groups: Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland. The players completed different fun games scoring points along the way for their country. One of the fun games, which was challenging and great for the players was scoring a point against Neil Cottrill, which they thoroughly enjoyed. All the players performed well and received a Certificate of Attendance.

Badminton Wales Development Officer and Coach Stephanie Marti-Jones commented:

'The session went really well, it was very different from the other sessions which have been run. Having the support and experience of Neil Cottrill really made an impact on the session.'
