University Partnerships

Badminton Wales and Cardiff University have signed an agreement which sees both commit to working together to encourage top Welsh talent into the university but also to allow talented players from outside of Wales to train in the BW High Performance system. Cardiff University will be able to attend selected events which will allow them to meet with and discuss with players and parents the benefits of being able to continue participating in top Badminton whilst studying for a top degree in a highly respected Welsh University.

Badminton Wales CEO Eddie O Neill commented

“At the moment the majority of talented players leave Wales to attend university which means that we lose contact with them at a critical time in their Badminton development. For the players who do stay in Wales high level sparring can be difficult to find, this partnership with Cardiff may eventually resolve those issues by attracting talent from outside of Wales to Cardiff in the knowledge that they can access top training and coaching. This will also help the University raise its own competitive profile in their own sporting events.“

Stuart Vanstone - Cardiff University Head of Sport commented

'The University Badminton club provides opportunities for students who have never played the game before through to those playing international representative Badminton. The partnership between the University and Badminton Wales will enable those players at the top of the performance pathway to train alongside the Welsh squad and receive coaching from national coaches. The University's men's and ladies teams are currently competing in the premier division of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues and I am sure this partnership will further enhance the performance of the University and Badminton Wales.'
