SWW 5x60 Regional 2015

A busy Llanelli Sports Hall saw fourteen school teams competing for the honour of being Gold medalists in the South West Regional 5 x 60 Tournament.  There were many excellent matches, showing that after school badminton clubs are developing their skills as well as being one of the most well attended after school sports in Wales.

Thanks go to the team of 5 x 60 officers who supported Badminton Wales’  Development Officers Angela Stevens and Phil Gwyther in getting all the matches completed in a fairly tight time schedule. There was an excellent competitive but fun atmosphere throughout the tournament with good sportsmanship ensuring not one dispute over scoring or line calls.

In the year 7 & 8 event, Cwmtawe showed their all-round ability by getting Runner up spot in both the boys and girls competitions.  It was also great to see that they had teams in boys and girls year 9 & 10 but in that event they failed to pick up medals.

It was a great day for the South Powys Schools who grabbed all the remaining medals as reward for a very early start to travel to the tournament however the early start didn’t seem to deter them as they jumped off the bus and straight into matches.

In the girls year 7 & 8 events, Builth were always in control and swept into first place without dropping a match.  Cwmtawe were second.  At year 9 & 10 level Brecon were also on form only dropping one match as they took first place.  Llandrindod girls took second place.

In boys competitions, Gwernyfed took a clean sweep with first place at both age groups, although their year 7 & 8 team didn’t have it all their own way. Cwmtawe again were second.

It was a very level and competitive group which started with Swansea’s Ysgol Gwyr team beating Gwernyfed 4 – 1.  Unfortunately for Gwyr they then lost their next two matches 3-2 and ended up third. Crickhowell also won one match and lost two close matches by 3-2.  In short there was very little between first and fourth place.

Gwernyfed’s year 9 & 10 boys didn’t drop a match as they took first place and it was an excitingly close match against Cwmtawe which saw Crickhowell boys into second place.
