5 x 60 National Finals 2013

The 20th & 21st March saw the second year of 5x60 National Badminton Finals for Years 9 and 10 and the inaugural finals for Years 7 and 8. The regional qualifiers from North and South, who had battled their way from the initial teams representing 105 schools from the 15 Local Authorities, met at Maldwyn Leisure Centre, Newtown, to see which teams were to become National Champions.

In the Years 7 and 8 competitions the Boys finalists were Stanwell (South East), Elfed (North Wales), Bryn Celynnog (South East), Llandrindod Wells (South West) and Newtown (North Wales) while the Girls finalists were Cowbridge (South East), Ysgol Towyn (North Wales), Maes Garmon (North Wales) and Bryn Celynnog (South East). All the teams arrived at the finals eager to play the matches in hope of claiming the accolade of ‘5x60 National Champions’.

With rules and formats of the day explained, the matches got underway.  There were a few close matches in the boys event with Elfed beating Bryn Celynnog 3-2, and Bryn Celynnog prevailing 3-2 over Newtown, however it was Stanwell who stole the show dropping only one game en route to lifting the title. Llandrindod Wells came second with Elfed finishing third, Bryn Celynnog fourth and Newtown fifth.

A group of four made up the Years 7 and 8 Girls event with yet again another dominant display from one of the South East sides. Like Stanwell Boys Team, Cowbridge Girls dropped only one game en route to claiming top prize. It was an all-South East final with Cowbridge beating Bryn Celynnog 4-1. Ysgol Towyn defeated Maes Garmon 3-2 to take third position.

Day 2 saw Years 9 and 10 battle it out for the honour of becoming 5x60 National Champions. The Boys finalists were Mold Alun (North Wales), Builth Wells (South West), Cowbridge (South East) and Llanfair Caereinion (North Wales). The Girls finalists comprised of Stanwell (South East), John Beddoes (South West) and Newtown (South West).

In the Boys event there were strong representatives from all 4 teams and all matches were closely contested, however it was Mold Alun who took overall victory with Builth Wells finishing in second place. Llanfair Caereinion defeated Cowbridge 3-2 to take third spot.

After claiming the Boys Years 7 and 8 competition the day before Stanwell added the Girls Years 9 and 10 title to their name. Their team consisted of Megan Lim, Grace Samuel, Chloe Parcell and Seren March. Stanwell won both matches 4-1 to claim overall victory with John Beddoes finishing as runners-up and Newtown finishing third.
