4 Nations

The 4 Nations Para-Badminton Welsh Championships took place this weekend at Sport Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. 59 participants took part across 2 categories; Learning Disabilities (LD) and Standing.

In the LD event the Welsh pairing of Lloyd Crawley and Daniel Grinter won the Class 2 Men’s Doubles event for a second year running. In the final the Swansea pairing overcame fellow team mate and training partner Marcony Kilminster who partnered Mark Bartlett from England. The final was a tight affair with the Swansea boys winning in 3 close games 15/21 21/19 21/15.

Wrexham player Stephen Davies was runner up in the Class 2 Men’s Singles event. After beating Jon Seal (England) at the group stage. In the final it was Jon who got the better of Stephen winning 21/19 in the 3rd set.

The Men’s Singles Standing SL3 event saw Daniel Bethell retain the title he won last year by defeating Alan Oliver in the final 21/8 21/9. Bobby Griffin won the SL4&5 Men’s Singles Standing title. Despite losing to Anthony Forster in the group stage Bobby won the all-important final with a comfortable 21/12 21/15 win. Bobby and Daniel paired up in the doubles event and added another gold medal to their names with Alan Oliver and Anthony Forster finishing in 2nd position.

Onto the Ladies Singles and it was Nadine Walmsley who overcame fellow competitor Katie O’Neill in the final 8/21 21/15 21/11. The mixed doubles event saw Cardiff’s Jack Wilson partner Abi Richards from England. Both players played extremely well and in doing so picked up the mixed doubles title with a well-deserved win against finalists Colin Leslie and Nadine Walmsley.
